It's the small things

Sitting here trying to write about my experience in Chile is almost impossible. The semester is literally flying by.

When people back home ask me: "How is it?" I always have trouble because there is no simple way to describe it. Being able to go to the bus station to catch a bus to the North, South or even into Argentina is insane. Going away for the weekend with just a backpack has become second nature to me. Eating street food, living with a host family, using a pay as you go phone... all these things have become my way of life. Having the opportunity to help families in Valparaiso that were affected from the fire is something I will never forget. In the last few months I have built incredible friendships with people from all over the world.

Before coming to Chile, I hadn't been exposed to much Spanish besides High School and a few semesters in college. Study abroad in a Spanish speaking country was initially a shock because they do not speak Spanish here, they speak Chilean. They have their own slang and talk extremely fast, but surprisingly I have become to love their "Chilenismos". Sometimes, simple things such as sending postcards can be way more complicated than it should be. When I went to the post office for a stamp, I was given a stamp but it didn't have the sticky part on the back. Can you imagine someone asking you how to use a stamp? They thought I was crazy. Turns out you have to lick the back of the stamp, which I found out when a guy licked the stamp and placed it on postcard for me...Thanks? Haha, man life is good here.
